Egypt is a popular destination for backpackers and package tourists suited with its breathtaking coastline, ancient civilization, lively towns and the beautiful Sahara. It can take weeks or even months to travel around its many highlights, and it really is something for everyone, it draws on beaches, diving opportunities galore, hiking in the Sinai and exploration of the magnificent temples and pyramids of one of the world most impressive ancient civilizations.
Travel to visit the south of the country is best in winter and in summer it is unbearably hot and almost impossible to comfortably. These include Aswan and Luxor, where to find so many of the ancient Egyptian monuments.
The summer months are the most popular time for visitors to the beaches on the Mediterranean coast, where the accommodation is at this time at a premium. Cairo is best visited in spring and autumn, so Egypt is truly a destination all year round.
For the backpacker, it’s the best time to visit is in spring or autumn, as this allows excursions used in most countries and regions attractions.
Health-wise – Egypts health service is quite good, although neither condition need serious medical care, have one of the larger hospitals in Cairo to see. There are actually only two precautions for any diseases in the country are required and that malaria and dengue fever.
Malaria exists only in the Al-Fayoum region and the rest of the country is not in danger. Dengue fever reported in the last ten years, and so precautions for this disease will also be necessary.
Everyday common sense is needed here, as in other countries in Africa, with schistosomiasis in the rivers and the scorching heat and sun. Basically, you should just refrain from swimming in the rivers, and remember to cover themselves with sunscreen and keep hydrated too. Under fluid therapy pills would be a good idea.
Visas and documents – all western citizens need a visa to enter into Egypt, they can either be purchased on arrival to a port or airport or at a consulate or embassy. Proof of yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are from an infected area (like most of sub-Saharan Africa).
It is very easy to get a visa for a visit from the surrounding countries, and tourism is an important part of the Egyptian economy, there will be no problems that you encounter in other African countries.
Cost – Egypt is a relatively cheap place to travel in, budget travelers should be able to get a daily limit of about $ 20 per day, which should cover the food, local transport and accommodation. Remember, it does not hurt to pamper yourself with a top restaurant or a night in this beautiful hotel you have seen once in a while.
Traveling is definitely a good price and trips to the oases of the Sahara or to the summit of Mount Sinai are also reasonable. Dive shops on the Red Sea coast are plentiful and as the competition is hot, the prices are kept low.
The sights – the Pyramids of Giza are a fantastic sight and one that many people see before long. Yes, it is crowded with tourists here, but you can blame them? There are many more temples and monuments scattered across the country and also in the north of Sudan (not to be visited at the moment) by the Civil War.
Abu Simbel is like an epicenter of the Egyptian monuments and treasures, and though we’ve read about the kidnappings and bombings in the area, it is not so bad to decipher how the Western press likes, but it is best to check with the local tourist office either in Cairo or Aswan.
The Red Sea has some great diving, and as already mentioned, these are easily accessible and a good price. The villages that are located near Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada are cosmopolitan places with visitors from around the world.
The bombs that have happened in recent years, regrettable, but the locals have the drive to get this wanton act of destruction.
The oases of the Sahara are a great place to get away from the crowds of the cities and towns. Siwa Oasis near the Libyan border is a popular destination, as it Farafra near the White Desert. Both are relatively easy to reach and provide tours in the sand.
It is often overlooked Egypts Islamic past as well as that of the ancients, and with some of the best bazaars in the region, Cairo particularly attractive. One of the most vibrant cities in the world, Cairo’s major museums and galleries, but the highlight should just walk the medieval streets alongside the traders and children!
